Good news for Self-builders

Modern self build house

Good news for all our self-build clients. Self-builders will now be exempt from paying a community infrastructure levy in a bid to get 3,000 stalled homes underway.

Communities secretary, Eric Pickles, announced the changes to the levy, which will save self-builders thousands of pounds in charges. A council would previously charge around £100 per square metre for residential developments, meaning a four-bedroom house would incur a levy of £15,000.

Mr Pickles said: ‘Building your own home is always a challenge and we are doing what we can to help people realise their dream and provide a home for their family. This change will save self-builders thousands of pounds and help many more in the future.

‘By boosting the numbers of people building their own home we can help increase the number of new houses built each year in this country and support local businesses. There are too many levies and charges on housing. By cutting these, we can help build more homes.’

The exemption will cover homes that are owner-occupied and built or commissioned by individuals, families or groups of individuals for their own use.

From April, family annexes will also be exempt from the levy and from council tax.

2013 Review

2013 was a good year. It was the year the America’s Cup AC72’s took sailing to another level. It felt a little like that at Snug. Things have definitely gone to another level.

This was the year we celebrated our first decade. It has been a decade where every year of trading was our best year of trading. We feel very grateful, to all our clients and the hard working team, both past and present, that make Snug such a great place to work.

At the start of the year we moved to new premises, close to the train station in Winchester. The additional space has given us room to expand and already we have filled the space with two new members of staff, taking the team to eight.

The year really felt like the end of one era and the beginning of the next. Our core business remains the creation of special places to live, but the scale is changing and we feel privileged to be working with families, developers and communities to help create places and spaces that people love.

It was also a year were awards, like buses, all came at once. It was satisfying to have four projects shortlisted for awards, three local and one national. Although the recognition of our industry is encouraging, it cannot beat the satisfaction of happy clients and a contented team and it is that which we will continue to work hard for in 2014.

Public consultation

The presentation of our proposals for public realm improvements to Woolford and Wilberforce Close in Stanmore were well received. A good number of local residents and stakeholders attended the evening presentation. It is hoped that a planning application will be submitted in the coming weeks.
