Coates
House

A significant Prior Approval office to residential conversion in Nailsea nr Bristol.

Coates House is a Prior Approval office to residential conversion located on the edge of the village of Nailsea nr Bristol. The development provides 50 one and two bedroom apartments. The challenge was to give a tired mid 20th century office building a new, more residential, appearance. The proposal celebrates the existing buildings dynamic modernist form by defining a white box floating over the dark grey base. Apartments on the ground floor open directly onto the street and animate the ground plain while the upper apartments enjoy long distant countryside views. The insulated render facade is splayed to maximise views and solar gain, giving subtle articulation to the facade and animating the building through 'the play of light on volumes.'
