South Downs House

South Downs House is a low-impact, highly sustainable contemporary home set within the South Downs National Park. Carefully integrated into its sensitive rural setting, the design adopts a landscape-led approach that minimises its visual impact while creating a modern home with a strong connection to the surrounding countryside.

"Working with Snug Architects on South Downs House has been a thoroughly rewarding experience. From the outset, they demonstrated a clear understanding of both our aspirations and the sensitive planning context of the South Downs National Park. Their design exceeded our expectations – beautifully contemporary yet respectful of its rural setting. They guided us seamlessly through the planning process, successfully overcoming the challenges posed by the Local Authority. Their attention to detail, creativity, and professionalism made the entire journey both enjoyable and reassuring. We’re thrilled with the outcome and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them."

Securing planning permission for new homes within the South Downs National Park requires careful navigation of stringent planning, landscape and ecological policies. Every proposal must demonstrate that it conserves and enhances the National Park's special qualities while responding sensitively to its unique setting. South Downs House successfully achieved planning permission at the first application through a carefully considered, landscape-led design approach.

The proposal places landscape and nature at the heart of the design, enhancing biodiversity through new native planting and habitat creation while carefully considering protected species, including bats. By combining contemporary architecture with a robust planning strategy and ecological enhancement, the project demonstrates how innovative, sustainable design can deliver exceptional homes that sit harmoniously within one of England's most treasured landscapes.
