Canford Cliffs
Challenge: Canford Cliffs was a constrained urban former hotel site, with tight boundaries, significant mature trees and the need to accommodate parking while maximising the site’s development potential.
Solution: Snug developed a high-density design with basement parking, allowing more of the site above to be used for homes and landscape. Carefully considered massing, generous balconies and a set-back upper floor enabled additional height and capacity while creating an elegant architectural response.
Outcome: A high-quality housing scheme that significantly increases development capacity and value, demonstrating how intelligent modern design can unlock the full potential of a constrained urban site.
Fanfare Place
Challenge: Fanfare Place was a constrained urban site on a prominent town centre site, requiring a the rehousing of several charities in a mixed-use scheme. The challenge was to deliver significantly more homes while creating an appropriate response to a prominent and constrained location.
Solution: Snug carefully tested the site to maximise development capacity, breaking down the building mass to create a more considered urban form without sacrificing valuable units. The design balances density, viability and placemaking.
Outcome: A significantly higher-density scheme that unlocks the site’s potential, delivering more homes and greater value while creating a confident and well-considered response to its urban context.
The Valley
Challenge: The Valley was a steep, heavily constrained suburban site with significant level changes and mature trees. Previously considered too difficult to develop, the challenge was to unlock the land while responding sensitively to its landscape and surrounding community.
Solution: Snug worked creatively with the challenging topography, using a landscape led approach to shape the masterplan and architecture. Careful testing increased development capacity while retaining important open space, trees and views across the site.
Outcome: A previously undevelopable site was transformed into a successful new neighbourhood, demonstrating how thoughtful design can overcome complex constraints and realise the potential of difficult land to deliver much needed affordable housing.
Holmwood
Challenge: A sensitive site in a New Forest Conservation Area with a retained heritage asset.
Solution: Snug broke the development into a series of smaller villas that respected the context, carefully balancing density with a sensitive response to the New Forest vernacular.
Outcome: A contemporary housing scheme that overcame previous planning concerns, realised the site’s development potential and gave new life to a tired heritage asset.
Old Street
Challenge: Old Street is a significant village edge development in a sensitive landscape setting.
Solution: Snug developed a landscape led design that cleverly integrated existing and proposed landscape features into the new masterplan.
Outcome: A significant new development that celebrates and integrates with its landscape setting.
Station Yard
Challenge: Station Yard was a brownfield site, located at the heart of a village, that others had failed to unlock.
Solution: Snug developed an urban design led approach that successfully integrated with the existing context, reconnecting historic patterns of movement.
Outcome: A development that reconnects and heals a site at the heart of the community and efficiently addresses the site constraints.
Kings Barton
Challenge: Kings Barton formed part of a major urban extension, requiring a commercially viable housing scheme to be developed within an ambitious programme.
Solution: Snug worked collaboratively with a large consultant team to refine the masterplan, balancing development capacity, design quality and a strong sense of place.
Outcome: A high-quality new neighbourhood that realises the site’s potential while creating an attractive and deliverable place to live.
