Across the UK, interest in Christianity is growing again and reports tell us that church attendance is on the increase. That growth brings opportunity – but also responsibility. Churches need spaces that are ready to serve the mission ahead.
As a company founded and led by Christians, we believe this moment is an opportunity for the church to build well, and we see our work as part of that wider story. Our role is to help churches shape buildings that support worship, hospitality and community outreach.
To do that well, we bring together the core disciplines needed to lead the process from early vision and feasibility through to design, procurement and delivery.
We understand that church leaders are not usually building specialists. They are pastors, trustees, wardens, staff and volunteers carrying deep responsibility for the life of the church. That is why our job is not only to design, but to guide, explain and reassure at every stage.
Church building projects can feel weighty. They often involve questions about stewardship, managing differing views within the congregation, concerns about cost and uncertainty about where to begin.
We understand that reality. Building decisions sit alongside pastoral responsibilities, governance duties, legal restrictions and long-term mission planning. Our approach brings calm, structure, expertise and clarity to a process that can otherwise feel overwhelming.

Church buildings are not the mission, but they do shape how that mission is carried out. A church building can make it easier to welcome people, gather well, run ministries, serve the community and make room for growth. It can also make those things harder. Many churches know that feeling. The building no longer fits the life of the church as it is now, let alone where it hopes to go next. That is why building projects matter. "Make Hope Visible"
We are Architect for the Eternal Wall of Answered Prayer, which will be the largest Christian monument in the UK. Snug won the international RIBA competition to design this nationally significant project. It has been a huge privilege to work with the charity to help deliver the project and Make Hope Visible at the heart of the UK.
Case Studies
Below is a selection of our recent church projects, illustrating the breadth of our experience and the range of churches and communities we have worked alongside. Each project is different, shaped by its own mission, people and place. Together, they demonstrate how we help churches turn their unique buildings into places that support worship, welcome, growth and community impact.
St Winfrid’s, Totton
Challenge: St Winfrid’s was an underused early 20th century Grade II listed church in need of major re-ordering and modernisation. It lacked any active frontage and suffered from poor internal circulation and poor environmental performance, making it difficult for the building to support the church’s wider mission and welcome.
Solution: Snug reimagined the frontage and cleverly reorganised the entrance and internal circulation to transform the flow and welcome, creating a new café space and enlarged foyer at the heart of the church.
Outcome: Attendance grew quickly from around 25 to around 250 worshippers, and the project went on to win the 2025 National Church Architecture Awards Presidents’ Award.
St Luke’s Church, Winchester
Challenge: St Luke’s is a mid-20th-century concrete church that is no longer cost effective to maintain. It sits on a large but steeply sloping site with poor accessibility, limiting how welcoming and practical the church felt.
Solution: Snug worked with the church and diocese to establish a masterplan for the site that included a residential enabling development. We achieved positive pre-app support for the principle of replacing the existing church with a comprehensive development of the site. We designed an innovative modern church on the sloping site, helped build relationships with a local social housing developer and supported negotiations with the local council on a new more cost effective site for the replacement church.
Outcome: We helped the church successfully unlock a financially viable way forward that will retain a viable church congregation within the community.
Family Church, Portsmouth
Challenge: The Drill Hall is a listed city-centre building in need of a new purpose, with the challenge of adapting its historic fabric to meet the needs of a modern, welcoming church.
Solution: Snug developed a sensitive reuse strategy that celebrates the character of the existing building while creating flexible spaces for worship, community, café and outreach.
Outcome: The proposals give the Drill Hall a sustainable new life, creating an accessible and vibrant church at the heart of the city and a welcoming home for the wider community.
St Mary’s Church, Eling
Challenge: This Grade II* listed church is over 1000 years old and needed additional meeting rooms and improved facilities, but any intervention had to protect the historic fabric and character of the building.
Solution: Snug developed a discreet extension within the churchyard, linked sensitively to the original church, and introduced internal reordering so the building could better support weekday use as well as worship.
Outcome: We helped the church to meet its modern needs without harming its historic significance.
Blandford Parish Church, Blandford
Challenge: This Grade I listed church needed to protect and celebrate its historic fabric while exploring how its building could better support present-day ministry and use.
Solution: Snug carried out a comprehensive programme of engagement events with the congregation, local schools and wider community. This informed a robust evidence base for the Statement of Need.
Outcome: The church now has a robust basis for negotiating changes to the heritage asset.
Holy Trinity Church Hall, Aldershot
Challenge: The existing church hall was ageing, unsuitable for youth work and no longer serving the wider mission of the church site effectively.
Solution: Snug ran engagement workshops with church stakeholders, then undertook a feasibility study to develop a strategic brief and design options that informed a preferred masterplan for the site and a new hall with flexible facilities.
Outcome: The church has much greater confidence and clarity on the future of its buildings and their ability to serve its mission.
Basingstoke Church, Basingstoke
Challenge: These city-centre Anglican churches needed to balance outreach, worship and practical site constraints across several distinct sites.
Solution: Snug undertook early feasibility studies and masterplanning work to help the church leadership test options, shape priorities and phase future development sensibly with an integrated strategic plan.
Outcome: The church leadership have moved forward with a clearer vision, stronger trustee confidence and greater clarity about how their various sites and buildings can support mission across the town.

Prepare

Building a Shared Vision
The most important decisions in a church building project are often made before a single drawing is produced. Long before plans are submitted or contractors are appointed, a church needs clarity about why change is needed, what it hopes to achieve, and what faithful stewardship requires.
At Snug, we help churches take this early step well. Through careful preparation we help leadership teams test ideas, clarify priorities and build confidence and consensus around the right project strategy.
Vision
Church building projects usually begin because something no longer fits the life of the church today. The congregation may be growing, community activities may have outgrown the available space, or the building may feel tired, unwelcoming or difficult to access and use.
The opportunity is not simply to solve a problem, but to create a building that better supports worship, outreach and ministry.
We help churches pause and ask the right questions before moving forward, so the project is shaped by mission, not just functional or immediate concerns or needs.

Unity
Successful church building projects are rooted in shared understanding, vision and purpose. Leaders need space to ask questions, explore concerns and build consensus before major decisions are taken. Our role is to help guide these conversations so the church moves forward together and with confidence.
Design

Turning vision into architecture
For many churches, this stage is exciting, but can also feel daunting. Questions often arise about planning, heritage constraints, flexibility, accessibility and cost. Our role is to guide churches through that process carefully, ensuring that design decisions remain rooted in mission and reality.
Concept design
Concept design is where design options are explored and tested. It asks what kind of space is needed, how people will move through it, how worship and community activity will be supported, and how the church’s identity can be reflected in the new building.
This may involve creating more a welcoming entrance, improving access, increasing flexibility, developing spaces for children or community use, or adapting the building so it can better support the rhythms of church life.

Historic buildings
Many churches occupy historic
or listed buildings that are deeply loved and architecturally
significant. Changes to these buildings need to be handled with great
care.
At Snug, we work closely with churches, the DAC, heritage bodies and local authorities to understand the heritage of the building and its impact on the needs of the present congregation to ensure building projects are completed legally, safely and to a high standard.
Deliver

Building Your Vision
Once planning permission and other approvals are secured, the focus shifts to delivery. This is where design moves from drawings into construction.
At this stage there are contractors to appoint, costs to monitor and practical decisions to make. For many churches this can feel unfamiliar. Snug provides professional oversight so that church leaders are supported throughout the process and not left to navigate the complexity alone. How we help:
Technical drawings
Before construction begins, the project is developed into a set of detailed technical drawings and specifications. We lead the Consultant team to develop a coordinated and compliant package ready for tender and construction. These guide contractors and ensure projects are delivered safely and in line with regulations.
Construction support
During construction, we help manage the process, keep communication clear, and provide regular reporting so church leaders know what is happening and what decisions need to be made. We are typically appointed as Contract Administrator (CA), helping to oversee the contract, administer the construction process and keep reporting clear.
This includes:
