Our culture

Although our beginnings are small, our work is growing in scale and complexity. Critical to this growth is maintaining our standards and our ethos. Our potential to make a difference in the lives of others is a privilege and a responsibility we take seriously. Our culture is based on 7 core characteristics.

We are:

Creative  We are a design led practice. This means our solutions transcend the pragmatic. Our ideas are derived from a creative spark that is grounded in a rigorous analysis of the site and project requirements. We regularly delight our clients by delivering more for less.

Practical   We build most of what we design. This ensures our ideas are deliverable and firmly rooted in the practical realities of the construction industry. We pride ourselves on delivering profitable projects that align with our client’s values. The appreciation of our peers is satisfying, but not as essential to us as the satisfaction of knowing we have happy clients.

Thoughtful   We actively seek to progress the intellectual basis for our work. This is found in connection with others, whether it is through collaboration, critique or reflection. We love discussing design and welcome constructive dialogue. We also teach architecture and urban design and have, for over ten years, been helping to deliver a joint civil engineering and architecture degree at Southampton University.

Confident   Our confidence is based on both competence and experience. We have a track record that has equipped us to deliver. Our team is well trained, experienced and willing to learn. Collectively we bring depth and breadth of both knowledge and skill to the design process and, in collaboration with others, we are confident we can deliver.

Dedicated   We love what we do and we love where we live. This motivates us to work both hard and smart. We also recognise that our ability to sustain this requires adequate time for renewal and the strength that comes from a good work life balance.

Generous   We are committed to being generous with both our time and profits. In addition to giving a proportion of our profits away each year we also give generously of our time. We contribute to design advocacy in our region, examples being chairing the Local Design Review Panel and an RIBA regional Special Interest Group. We have the privilege of using our professional expertise to provide free advice to local charities and have consistently used our visionary thinking to provoke proactive debate on our shared built environment.

Honest   We believe that the way in which we do business is as important as the quality of the work we produce. We are committed to staying in business for the long term and seek to build long term relationships with clients based on trust, mutual respect and a good job done right each time.

Practice ethos

We believe Snug is great a place to work. We have a great team. Our staff are the back bone of the practice. It is their skill and dedication that ensures our ongoing success. We want to ensure every member of the team prospers, both in their career and in life. We recognise that a healthy work life balance is key. We enjoy working together and cultivate a strong team ethic. This starts with shared coffee breaks, Friday lunch and drinks after work and extends to day trips to visit seminal buildings or just going kayaking together. We also recognise the role our loved ones play in all our success and aim to take all staff and their families away for a treat once a year.

We recognise that there is further to go and, to become the best we can be, we must work together. We encourage all staff to contribute their ideas to the future development of the practice.

Students   We are committed to building and maintaining a long term and stable team. This begins with our commitment to students. We are active in architectural education, regularly providing placements for young people to have work experience and we support architecture students through all stages of their education, most returning to work with us after qualification.

Charity   We support a wide range of charities each year. Staff are each allocated a share of the companies profits to donate to a charity of their choosing.
